The years 1959-1968

Jet age commences for KLM with introduction of Douglas DC-8.
1959

Lockheed Electra

Lockheed had meanwhile produced another new aircraft which was signed up for the KLM fleet the Lockheed L-188C Electra II.
1960

Jet Age DC-8-30

The year 1960 saw the entry of KLM into the jet age. The company took delivery of its first jetliner, the Douglas DC-8-30.
1961

Beugel succeeds Aler

A change of the watch at the company's top. E.H. van der Beugel succeeded I.A. Aler as chief executive officer.
1962

Chick ready to Fly

KLM's activities were expanding fast, especially in freight transportation. A large consignment of one-day chicks waiting for shipment. Transport of animals was a specialization on which the company had concentrated from its early days. It had already seen a similar shipment in 1923.
1963

Albarda succeeds Beugel

E.H. van der Beugel completed his two-year term of office and was succeeded by H. Albarda on June 28th, 1963.
1964

Douglas DC-8F freighter

KLM was the first European airline to introduce the Douglas DC-8F air freighter, capable of carrying 35,000 kilograms of cargo.
1965

H. Albarda dies in crash

H. Albarda died in a tragic accident while on a leisure trip through the Swiss Alps in a small plane. He was succeeded by G. van der Wal.
1966

Cockpit DC-8

Cockpit of a DC-8 jetliner. The influence of the new ergonomics is visible in its configuration. The science was to leave an increasing mark on cockpit design. The current state-of-the-art 'glass cockpits' with their computer screen displays installed in aircraft types such as the Boeing 747-400 and MD-11, are highly user-friendly as a result.
1967

Home base Schiphol

Home base Schiphol had meanwhile undergone a major transformation. An entirely new terminal was opened on the western edge of the airport.
1968

KLM Helicopters

The discovery of oil under the North Sea meant work for KLM Helicopters (now known as KLM/ERA Helicopters). Flights to offshore oil rigs commenced on March 27th, 1968.
